From Sheltered Grade Schooler to Badass CrossFitter

By Mona Youssofi Running off the school bus in excitement, the little sixth grade girl couldn’t wait to get home and tell her father she was going to try out for the intramural tennis team at school.  Unfortunately for her, what she didn’t know, and very quickly came to realize, her strict father had other ideas about what the hopeful little girl was going to do with her free time. It was a hard NO to the tennis idea.  My father told me I could not participate in any school sports for two reasons: 1) They were scheduled after school, and I needed to be home early and present when my father was home, and 2) I wasn’t allowed to wear shorts, skirts, and the like.  And with that went all of my dreams of being the next Andre Agassi. Throughout my secondary education, I had to sit back and watch my older brother play all the sports he wanted and excel impressively.  I was envious beyond belief. I wanted to get out there and prove myself physically.  With his achievements, I felt like it must be in our blood to accomplish such greatness physically and all I needed to prove that, was my freedom. Years went by, freedom came, college happened, and subsequently, so did my social life.  I forgot all about reaching physical greatness whilst doing shots of vodka and “droppin’ it low” at the club with friends.
